One and a half hour after turning on my new PSVITA it crashed and died.
After getting multiple javascript errors in the browser (on Facebook) it froze and after going into standby (somehow it could still do that) it wouldn’t start again.
After a long discussion with the store clerk at Tsutaya and they had a talk with Sony’s support I could finally replace my broken PSPVITA. Thanks to Konomi. There is no way I could have done it myself.
The reason why I couldn’t just return it was that I created a PSN account on it, therefore it would normally had to be sent to Sony to remove it first. Because I had to leave Japan they made an exception.
After getting my PSPVITA replaced I found out through a Japanese friend that more users in Japan also had the same problem with frozen units.
Because it looked like a software failure I’m still holding my breath. Anyone know a solution in case of a new crash?

Don’t know of a fix, but I know mine just received the same problem under a different situation. Was trying to find nice wallpapers on a website while waiting for a demo to download, and when my download queue filled, I saved a few pages in the web browser, then went back to the main screen to check up on the download. The download finished, and installed on a brand new page, instead of where I was going to keep all my games on my second page, so I left it there for a bit while I checked out my new images. Once I had a few, I went back to the main screen, moved my new demo to the second page, and then tried setting the wallpaper to one of my new images, and it froze exactly like you said yours did. It was completely unresponsive, and still is, and after 5 minutes put itself on standby where it remains unresponsive. Doesn’t seem to be a widespread thing yet, but I hope that someone finds a solution soon other than replacing it. :/
One more advancement I just found, it seems to still respond to having my USB cable plugged in from my computer, as my computer will alert me that the PS Vita has been connected or disconnected, but still no response from the machine itself.
A shame to hear about another died PSVITA. Have you tried to access the recovery menu?
I didn’t know about it then, but see if you can access the recovery menu:
“Turn OFF your PS Vita (Press Power Button for 10 seconds)
Now press and hold “R” + Power + PS (PlayStation Button)
Wait…
Now you’re in Recovery Menu (Mode)”
Or connected to the PC, maybe you could access it through their manager?
Did you have the latest firmware btw?
Just called up Sony, and got a solution. Make sure you Vita is unplugged from power or computer, then hold the power button down for 30 seconds. After that, it should show the PS logo, and have a screen with 5 options, the first being Restart PS Vita, just select that and it should be good to go again.
That’s good to know! Thanks for sharing
